Four ways to get involved

Full requirements and training
Firefighter / EMT

Firefighter / EMT

Train for both fire and EMS service. Firefighter I and EMT are required; training is provided. Local operational members commit at least 32 duty hours each month, plus training, meetings, and events.

EMS only

Focus on ambulance service as an EMT or paramedic. Members must have or obtain Maryland EMT; training is provided. Paramedics also complete the county ALS internship.

Student live-in

Experienced firefighters and EMTs can apply to live at the station through the Sack Room program, with assigned duty shifts in exchange for housing.

What to expect

Real training
A real commitment

Applicants must be at least 18, or 16 with parental consent, and pass a background investigation. Operational applicants must also pass the county Fire/EMS physical.

Membership includes initial and ongoing training, active participation, and department events. Live-in applicants should discuss their existing fire and EMS qualifications with the recruitment team.

Tell us about yourself
Do I need previous experience?

New local firefighter / EMT and EMS members may join without previous training. Training is provided. The Sack Room live-in program is for experienced firefighters and EMTs.

Can I volunteer for firefighting only?

Firefighter / EMT members must have or obtain both Firefighter I and EMT. College Park also offers EMS-only membership and non-operational administrative and support roles.

What is the time commitment?

Local operational members commit at least 32 duty hours each month, in addition to training, meetings, and events. Live-in members serve assigned duty shifts.

What happens after I inquire?

The process includes an interview, ride along, application, background investigation, and the required physical for operational applicants. Recruit school and in-station progression follow.
